Exelon Byron Nuclear Generating Station
Due to the recent detection of tritium at two other Exelon nuclear power plants
in Illinois, Exelon inspected six vaults on the blow down line at the Bryon
Generating Station in Ogle County. Upon inspection, five of the vaults
had standing water in them containing tritium. Exelon contacted the
federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), Illinois Emergency Management
Agency (IEMA) - Division of Nuclear Safety (DNS) and Illinois Environmental
Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) in February 2006 to inform the two state agencies
of their discovery. Since that time, Exelon has been working with the
Illinois EPA to investigate any tritium contamination in the groundwater.
