Western Lion Landfill / Services Disposal #1
Mattoon, Illinois
The two landfills cover 66 acres in rural Coles County, between Cnarleston
and Mattoon, Illinois. Western Lion was closed by an agreed order in January
1996. Leachate (rainwater contaminated with landfill waste) collected in a
200 by 100 foot pit, left when the former owner excavated on an unpermitted
area
into existing waste, and threatened Riley Creek. This became one of the top
5 priority sites on the list of 33 landfills in the Abandoned Landfills Program,
for which Illinois EPA received
funding from the state legislature.
