Lisa Bonnett, Director
Lisa Bonnett was appointed Director of the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency by
Governor Pat Quinn, effective March 18. 2013. Director Bonnett has more than 30 years
experience in state government, including more than 20 years at the Illinois EPA. She
served as Deputy Director since 2008, including a term as Interim Director from March
2011 to October 2011. Director Bonnett has been a driving force behind Governor Quinn’s
Clean Water Initiative, which helps local governments overhaul aging drinking water and
wastewater treatment plants and distribution and collection systems, while creating 28,000
jobs. Director Bonnett also led negotiations in 2011 that resulted in a streamlining of
the Illinois EPA that improved Illinois’ business climate by making the permit process
more efficient while still safeguarding the environment. She previously served as the
Chief Financial Officer, where she managed the agency’s complex $2 billion annual budget
and also implemented several cost-efficiency initiatives. She holds BA and MBA degrees
from the University of Illinois-Springfield.
