Environmental Progress - Spring 1996

May 1 is Deadline for Pollution Prevention Awards Nominations

May 1, 1996, is the deadline for submitting applications in either of two categories for the 10th Annual Governor's Pollution Prevention Awards. The awards, recognizing outstanding efforts in pollution prevention, are presented by the Hazardous Waste Research and Information Center (HWRIC) of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Winners will be announced during a ceremony next fall.

Eligible for awards in the standard category are small, medium and large industries; vendors; trade organizations; community groups; and educational institutions that began or completed innovative pollution prevention projects by Dec. 31, 1995.

A second category recognizes sustained accomplishments in pollution prevention occurring over several years.

Applications will be judged on pollution prevention achievements including:

  • Processes or material changes to reduce the volume or toxicity of waste;
  • Recovery of reusable materials or energy;
  • Improved operation or maintenance procedures that reduce waste;
  • Technology developments that reduce waste;
  • Outreach and education programs to promote pollution prevention.

Application forms can be obtained by contacting the HWRIC Governor's Award, 1 E. Hazelwood Drive, Champaign, Ill. 61820; phone: 217-333-8940; TDD 217-785-0211; fax: 217-333-8944.

Winners of last year's awards included Amoco Chemical Co.'s Willow Springs Plant, in Willow Springs; 3M's Cordova facility in Cordova; Chrysler Corp.'s Belvidere Assembly Plant, in Belvidere; and Honeywell's Microswitch Division, in Freeport. Thirteen other firms received certificates of recognition.
