Standing in stately splendor, a solitary heron surveys its watery habitat in a southern Illinois wetland. Herons are symbolic of wetlands, and wetlands form a small but precise part of the Illinois environment.

The Illinois EPA is working to protect these important ecosystems. Efforts aimed at preventing water pollution, remediating existing contamination and enlisting public support in preserving the state's water resources are themes of six stories found in this edition of Environmental Progress.
