Environmental Progress - Spring 1996Spring Household Hazardous Waste Collections ScheduledThese popular events help rid kitchens, basements and garages of dangerous materials, safely and efficiently. The Illinois EPA and local communities and organizations are cosponsoring the spring round of household hazardous waste collections through June 1996. Collections are scheduled on Saturdays, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Residents of cosponsoring communities are urged to bring weed killers, drain cleaners, paints, thinners, anti-freeze, pesticides and similar household products. Explosives, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, agricultural chemcials and business waste will not be accepted. Also, residents are asked to take used motor oil and auto batteries to local recyclers. "These popular events allow citizens to properly dispose of potentially hazardous household products," said Illinois EPA Director Mary A. Gade. "To date, the Agency has assisted in 133 successful collections, which filled 21,873 drums with hazardous wastes gathered from more than 122,370 households." Household hazardous waste collections are free to the public. A contractor hired by the Illinois EPA correctly disposes of all collected wastes. The program is funded by statewide fees on landfilled solid waste. The accompanying table lists dates, cities, collection points, cosponsors and local contacts for collections scheduled in May and June. Another series of collections is planned for the fall.
