| Sunday,
June 2, 1996, has been selected for the annual Chicago
River Rescue Day, when volunteers will pick up trash and
replant sections of the river bank as part of American
River Month and Illinois Rivers Appreciation Month. The
cleanup, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., will be followed by a
picnic for all participants at a location to be
announced.
Volunteer teams representing public agencies, local
businesses and citizen groups will organize operations at
more than 15 sites between Lake Katherine in Palos
Heights and Prairie Wolf Slough in Lake County.
During last year's event, 420 volunteers worked at 13
cleanup sites and removed more than eight tons of trash,
including discarded tires, stolen shopping carts, an
oxygen tank and a safe.
Additional information can be obtained by calling the
Friends of the Chicago River, at 312-939-0490.
