Environmental Progress - Spring 1996Seventh Annual Ohio River Sweep Is Slated for June 15Volunteers in six states bordering the Ohio River will join on June 15, 1996, for the seventh annual "Ohio River Sweep" cleanup day organized by the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission and the Illinois EPA. There will be at least one cleanup area in each of the six Illinois counties bordering the river. An estimated 400 volunteers are expected to take part. Each year, citizens donate time to pick up debris littering the riverbanks along their stretch of the river. Recovered materials will be recycled where possible. Volunteers receive free T-shirts commemorating their participation. In some locations, local merchants will supply refreshments and snacks. Additional information can be obtained by calling Byron Mark, at the Illinois EPA's regional office in Marion, at 618-993-7200. |
