Environmental Progress - Autumn 1996

Illinois EPA Educational Program Underway

Fifth grade teachers in Illinois public and private schools have until Oct. 30, 1996, to sign up for the 1997 educational program offered by the Illinois EPA. Participating teachers receive an environmental curriculum to use in the classroom during January. Students then design posters or write essays or poems to illustrate what they have learned, and in February each school may submit one entry in each of the poster and poem/essay categories.

Six top winners receive U.S. savings bonds, ribbons and books on the environment for their school libraries. All finalists receive ribbons and a certificate, and are inviited to a reception in Springfield for presentation of awards. The 50 finalists' entries are displayed at a downtown Springfield bank for one week.

Additional information can be obtained from Gloria Ferguson at 217-782-5562, or on the Agency's Internet Kids page at <URL http://www.epa.state.il.us/kids/ >.
