 "And the answer is..."
Youngsters could earn prizes with the right answers
playing the Land Wheel game during the 1996 Illinois
State Fair. Random spins of the dial defined question
categories such as farmlands, wetlands, cities/towns,
woodlands, or prairies.

A young Fair Visitor considers the
categories on the Land Wheel game, before committing
himself to take a whirl at a prize.

A toss of the king-sized die was the
first step toward making the right moves to win a prize
playing ECOLand at the Illinois State Fair exhibit in
Conservation World. This player appears to be plotting
the throw carefully.

Boosted by almost perfect summer weather through most
of its 10 day run, the 1996 Illinois State Fair in Springfield drew
near-record crowds in August. Hundreds of fair-goers found time each
day to stop by the Illinois EPA's exhibit in Conservation World.
Focus for the 1996 Fair exhibit was on
activities of the Bureau of Land. "Recycle Man"
built entirely of scrap materials was on hand daily.
Young visitors were encouraged to spin the Land Wheel and
answer questions in selected categories to win prizes, or
to try on actual gear worn in the field for emergency
responses. Other youngsters got their shot at winning
prizes by playing ECOland, a new addition this year to
the Agency's educational challenges.
Models of underground storage tanks and displays
showing toxics materials movement underground were on
view. Bureau of Land personnel answered specific
questions or guided fair-goers through the
environmentally-oriented games.
The Illinois EPA also manned a smaller information
booth, focusing on the Agency's Office of Small Business
and the Clean Break program, in the Governor's Tent on
the fairgrounds' main street. The Agency also provided a
display during the DuQuoin State Fair in southern
Illinois, ending a 10 day run there on Labor Day.
