| An expanded
stretch of approximately 20 river miles of the Rock River
will be targeted for cleanup on June 14, while volunteers
in the six Illinois counties bordering the Ohio River
will clean up riverbank debris during the ninth annual
Ohio River Sweep on June 21, 1997. The Rock River event
is the third annual cleanup of portions of that stream. The
six state Ohio River event is sponsored by the Ohio River
Valley Water Sanitation Commission (Orsanco), with the
Illinois segment jointly sponsored by Orsanco and the
Illinois EPA. There will be at least one designated
cleanup area in each of the counties -- Gallatin, Hardin,
Pope, Massac, Pulaski and Alexander. Volunteers are
provided with plastic pickup bags and work gloves, and
receive free tee-shirts commemorating their
participation.
