Environmental Progress - Summer 199711 Countywide Tire Pickups PlannedLast year, half a million old tires were collected for disposal. Check the accompanying chart for the site nearest you. The Illinois EPA is sponsoring 11 free countywide tire collections through mid-November. Participants may bring one to 1,000 tires to a collection, providing they agree not to accumulate waste tires and affirm that they have no additional waste tires on their properties. Those who have participated in previous collections are ineligible. Accumulating waste tires is a violation of environmental law. Truck and tractor tires will be accepted, but large industrial or off-road tires are barred, and no tires will be accepted from commercial trucking companies or tire retailers. The county-wide tire-removal program, funded by a $1 recycling fee added to the purchase price of each new tire, began in 1990. In 1996, some 6,000 participants brought more than 500,000 waste tires to 31 similar collections. By state law, retailers must accept worn tires for recycling when motorists purchase new tires, and the Agency encourages motorists to utilize this option and turn in used tires when purchasing replacements. Worn tires accepted by dealers are sent to tire recyclers. Some tires will be retreaded and reused, while others will be recycled into a variety of products. Most, however, will be shredded to make a high-energy-content fuel supplement that is burned in power plants, industrial boilers or cement kilns.
