Environmental Progress - Spring 1998

Plans Underway for 1998 Summer Internships

Forty summer positions will offer hands-on sampling of environmental careers.

GEC Logo (3845 bytes)For the last six years, the Illinois EPA and the private sector have partnered in the Governor’s Environmental Corps (GEC), a summer internship program open to college students and graduating high school seniors. Plans are now being developed for next summer’s internships. Forty positions will be available throughout the Illinois EPA, including the seven regional offices. Students will be involved with projects and activities including collection and identification of macroinvertebrates in Illinois’ rivers and streams, and will assist with the preparation of Illinois EPA reports. The nine week paid internships allow students to learn first-hand about environmental issues and careers while improving professional skills.

Applications for the 1998 GEC Summer Internship Program will be available March 1, 1998. Applications forms or additional information can be obtained from Kurt Neibergall at 217/785-1620. The application is also available at the Illinois EPA’s website (http://www.epa.state.il.us/).
