Particulate Matter On Ozone

- There were 14 Ozone Action Days in 1999, with the
majority occurring in July.
- Partners for Clean Air, a coalition of private sector,
government and health advocacy groups, maintains a Web site providing ozone
information for the Chicago metropolitan area; in July, the site experienced
its heaviest traffic with 4,046 visits and a daily high of 391 “hits” on
July 30.
- The site, www.cleantheair.org,
contains a message updated daily that reflects whether an Ozone Action Day
has been declared or is in effect; lists top ozone-reducing actions to take
on Ozone Action Days; and provides links to other ozone and health
information.
- Immediately following the last Ozone Action Days of
the summer, a Partners survey of 500 people in the six-county Chicago area
showed 78 percent had heard about Ozone Actions Days and 54 percent took an
ozone-reducing action such as limiting driving (43 percent), post-poning
lawn maintenance (13 percent) and refueling after 7 p.m. (8 percent).
- There were two exceedances of the one-hour federal air
quality standard for ground-level ozone in the Chicago metropolitan region
during 1999. However, they occurred in Indiana, not in Chicago.
- There were nine Ozone Action Days in 1998, with one
exceedance; 12 in 1997, with two exceedances; six in 1996, with five
exceedances; and 20 in 1995, with four exceedances.
- Elsewhere in Illinois, on four days the one-hour federal air quality standard
for ground-level ozone was exceeded: three in Jerseyville and one in
the Metro-East St. Louis area. On two days, the Metro East area had
unhealthy levels of ozone that did not actually exceed the federal standard.
