A Place for Everything -- Including Waste

State Fair exhibits promoted land quality, education, and small business activities

Box game
A young State Fair visitor finds it's not always easy to recognize what can or can't be recycled.

Two exhibits during the 1999 Illinois State Fair in mid-August highlighted protection of land quality, environmental education and small business.

With the theme "Litter Not!" the land exhibit in Conservation World gave visitors a chance to learn the top 10 reasons not to litter as well as a chance to win prizes. By playing "The Wheel of Land" or "Put Waste In Its Place," participants could test their knowledge of recycling and landfilling. Visitors who completed a brief survey indicating if their knowledge of waste had increased by visiting the exhibit were eligible for the daily recycled plastic "Hand Chair" give-a-way. Visitors could also pick up handouts on open dumps and Illinois EPA Web site bookmarks.

The second exhibit, housed in the Governor's tent, highlighted the small business toll-free helpline and the environmental education program. Visitors could log onto a computer and view the Agency's Envirofun Web pages developed specifically for elementary school students. Children 12 and under could register for the daily Envirofun tee shirt give away. Visitors could also pick up Petals of Flower Hill coloring books, air pollution coloring and activity books, small business toll-free helpline magnets and roledex cards, 50 Ways to Make the World A Better Place posters and Illinois EPA Web site bookmarks. This exhibit was also displayed at the DuQuoin State Fair from Aug. 28 - Sept. 6.

Captain Earthworm
