Governor Ryan Wields 200 Mile-long "Virtual" Scissors

=====

Opens Brookfield Zoo exhibit from State Fair site in Springfield

Gov. George Ryan cut a dragonfly-trimmed ribbon opening an exhibit some 200 miles away during the Illinois State Fair in August. Gov. George RyanWith his wife, Lura Lynn, at his side in the Tech Town exhibit at the Fair, and flanked by representatives of the Illinois EPA, the governor cut the ribbon opening the Dragonfly Marsh exhibit at Brookfield Zoo near Chicago. At the other end of the electronic hookup, Dr. George Rabb, the zoo's director, and Tom Davenport of U.S. EPA simultaneously cut an identical ribbon. The exhibit, to heighten awareness of the nature and importance of marshlands, was funded in part by U.S. EPA and the Illinois EPA.

The unique marsh is part of the larger Salt Creek Wilderness project at the zoo which also received financial support from the Illinois EPA and U.S.EPA. It will not be stocked with appropriate species, but rather is expected to attract its own tenants on a "build it and they will come" premise. By the time of the ribbon cutting, a number of targeted species including toads, frogs and herons had in fact already dropped by or taken up residence.
