Five Household Waste Pickups Can Ease Spring Cleaning

Starting in April, five events will accept household hazardous materials

Just in time to coincide with the start of spring cleaning, five household hazardous waste collections have been scheduled for spring 2000. Householders seeking ways to properly get rid of hazardous, unwanted common household items will be able to drop them off at no charge at locations including three high schools, a community college and a transfer station facility.

April 29 the season opens in Dixon. This event is being jointly co-sponsored by Lee and Ogle counties and will be held at Dixon High School. Lee County has pledged $50,000 while Ogle County is donating $25,000 to help pay the cost of this collection.

May 20, the second event is scheduled at the Wheeling Township Transfer Station in Glenview. The Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC) has pledged at least $13,000 for this collection.

June 3, Clinton High School in DeWitt County will be the site for a collection which is being co-sponsored by the DeWitt County Soil & Water Conservation District.

June 10, co-sponsor Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago has pledged $20,000 to help defray costs of what is expected to be a huge event scheduled at Moraine Valley Community College in Palos Hills.

The season concludes July 8 in Deerfield at Deerfield High School. This event is being funded entirely as the result of a Supplemental Environmental Project which was negotiated with Countryside Landfill in Lake County. The Solid Waste Agency of Lake County is helping co-sponsor this event.

The IEPA's contractors do not accept automotive batteries, propane tanks, or fire extinguishers, but co-sponsors may elect to contact a vendor willing to set up and accept these materials on the day of the collection. Call IEPA to verify what materials are being accepted.
