Environmental Progress - Summer 2000Clean Water 2000 Plays in Peoria To More Than 3000Protecting, improving water quality theme of annual event More than 3000 students, teachers and members of the public gathered March 20 for the annual Clean Water Celebration held in Peoria, Ill. Purpose of the celebration is to demonstrate what people of all ages can do to protect water resources, improve water quality, and educate others about the importance of these activities.
The event was held in the Peoria Civic Center. Some students who have worked on water issues during the school year gathered the day before the official opening to coordinate projects, and attend a dinner with special speakers to provide focus. Participants come from as far away as Kansas City and Indiana to participate; one group made an eight hour bus trip to attend. A varied program was offered the students, ranging from speakers, the Peoria Ballet in modern dance, ballet and jazz dance numbers featuring water themes, to science and environmental programs and booths. Students could build a dam, follow the path of water, observe water sample analyses, move water through a dam to keep a city at the end from running out of water, make balloon "bacteria", paint an environmental mural, construct a wall hanging from trash, or observe source water pollution and protection models.
