Environmental Progress - Summer 2000Earth Stewardship Event Stresses ResponsibilityNinth annual event draws record turnout
Approximately 1,400 fourth graders from 27 Sangamon county schools took part in the ninth annual Earth Stewardship Day on May 3 at the Ilinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield. Volunteers from the Illlinois Environmental Protection Agency staffed eight stations emphasizing the importance of clean air, land and water during the annual event. Co-sponsored by the Illinois Departments of Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Commerce and Community Affairs, the event offered a total of 41 presenter stations at sites scattered throughout the fairgrounds.
IEPA presentations included "We All Live Downstream", focusing on water quality, the Recycle Dash, The Toxic Relay, Water Work, water critters, an erosion table, Less Toxic Bingo, and a program spelling out how non-point source pollution occurs and what people can do to prevent it. The turnout of 1,400 fourth graders set an attendance record. To underscore the day's "stewardship" focus, the youngsters were asked to pack waste-free lunches. |
