Derek Aday, attending the University of Illinois in Champaign, and Mark Druffel, a student at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, received the scholarships during a lunch on the first day. The $1000 scholarships will be awarded annually to undergraduate/graduate students studying lakes and/or lake management.
Presentations were kicked off by keynote speaker Donna Sefton, the director of the Wisconsin Association of Lakes. Sefton was the first supervisor of the lakes and watershed unit at the IEPA and is a charter member of ILMA. The conference began with a day long phytoplankton-zooplankton identification workshop taught by Dr. David Jenkins, biology professor at the University of Illinois at Springfield. The eighth grade class from Athens Middle School, Athens, Illinois, with their teacher Heather Hendrix, gave a presentation of their water-oriented version of the television game show "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" complete with water related commercials. The class is a recipient of a Lake Education Assistance Program (LEAP) grant from the IEPA for the study of ponds and lakes. The Illinois EPA celebrated the 20th anniversary of its nationally recognized Volunteer Lake Management Program (VLMP) with a display chronicling the history of the VLMP and a specially designed tee shirt "Celebrating 20 in 2000". The conference concluded on Saturday with a field trip to Jake Wolf Memorial Fish Hatchery in Peoria. |
