Environmental Progress - Summer 2000Agency Volunteers Provide support for Hiking ScoutsMore than two tons of litter were removed
For the sixth consecutive year, IEPA volunteers manned rest stations to support hikers taking part in the annual Scout Lincoln Trail Hike from New Salem State Park to Springfield on April 29, 2000. This year, 1,141 hikers walked the 20 mile trail and collected litter as they walked. Thirty-two IEPA volunteers manned the rest stops. Hikers collected a total of 2.44 tons of litter, and the recycled aluminum cans earned $20, which will be donated to the local Scout Council. Cub Scouts of Menard County also participated by collecting litter on the country roads in their county. Scouts completing the hike received embroidered patches designed by Jim Hefley, BOW, and provided by the Agency. Waste Management of Springfield donated trash disposal services and the National Guard provided "water buffaloes." |
