Environmental Progress - Spring 20012001 Ohio River Sweep AnnouncedAnnual multi-state event set for June 16 along length of the Ohio River The 2001 Ohio River Sweep has been scheduled for Saturday, June 16, along the entire length of the Ohio River. The cleanup is organized by the Ohio river Valley Water Sanitation Commission, which has its headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio. In the Illinois segment, the operation is coordinated by the Illinois EPA, which has been a participant for 12 of the Sweep's 13 years. Volunteers are issued cleanup bags and gloves to remove litter and debris from the river banks. Materials collected are sorted and then removed for recycling or proper disposal. At many of the sites, local organizations or businesses provide snacks, drinks, or lunch for volunteers, who also receive a commemorative tee-shirt for their participation. A cleanup site has been designated for each of the six Illinois counties along the Ohio River. The sites and coordinators are:
