Environmental Progress - Winter 2003Environmental Progress : Winter 2003 First "Green Youth" Awards PresentedProgram recognizes "green" efforts by young people
Director Renee Cipriano presents Sarah Gillespie with the plaque she received as the only individual winner in the 2002 Green Youth Awards. Sarah, of Newton, constructed two wetlands on her family's property, complete with native aquatic plants that she hopes will provide habitat for a variety of animal species. In ceremonies last November 16, IEPA Director Renee Cipriano presented the first Illinois Green Youth awards to nine student groups from communities around the state, and to Sarah Gillespie, a student from Newton, the only individual recipient. Groups representing Chicago, Downers Grove, DuQuoin, Edwardsville, Lake Forest, Oak Lawn, New Boston, Pleasant Plains and Pontiac were recognized for their outstanding projects. Gillespie received her award for an extensive wetlands project. Young people 17 and under, enrolled in public, private or home school from kindergarten through 12th grade, were eligible to apply for recognition. Projects must involve one or more of the following categories: waste reduction; reduction of pollution in the air, water or land; restoration or preservation of natural areas; energy or water efficiency; or cleanup/beautification, and could have been started no earlier than January 2000. "We are committed to encouraging and recognizing outstanding youth-led activities that set an example for making our environment cleaner and greener," said Director Cipriano.
