Oil, garden chemicals and adhesives are among the top items of household hazardous waste taken to local collections. The Waste Reduction and Compliance Section's waste reduction unit conducted 14 one-day household hazardous waste collections in 13 counties last fall for the first half of fiscal year 2003. More than 1,478 fifty-five gallon drums of toxic materials were collected from 7,655 households. Total cost to conduct the 14 events was $590,063, an average of $42,147 per event and $77.08 per household. Cosponsor contributions totaled $131,100, to help defray costs of collection events. Twenty-three schools in or around targeted communities participated this fall and disposed of more than 35 fifty-five gallon drums of hazardous educational waste, chiefly old lab chemicals. Costs for school waste disposal totaled $22,910, an average of $996 per school. To date, the IEPA has co-sponsored 292 household hazardous waste collections, at which 262,100 households participated. A total of 53,765 drums of potentially dangerous common hazardous materials has been collected, at an average cost of $64,961 per event, and an average cost per household of $72.37.
