Environmental Progress - Spring 2003Brownfields Grants to 17 CommunitiesAwards announced at annual conference
Seventeen Illinois communities were recognized as recipients of Brownfields Redevelopment Grants at the 2003 Brownfields Conference held in Springfield May 20 and 21. Dan Fisher, mayor of Gillespie, accepts an oversize replica of the Brownfields grant check for his community from IEPA Director Renee Cipriano “ Brownfields grants provide Illinois communities with the funding they need to evaluate the environmental impact of past uses of property, enabling them to plan for rehabilitation and redevelopment,” said Illinois EPA Director Renee Cipriano. Topics at this year’s conference included strategies for site selection and land acquisition, regulatory changes affecting cleanups, financing strategies and opportunities, new remedial technologies and the skills needed to conduct environmental assessments. Seventy-five Illinois communities have received over $7.5 million for environmental assessments of brownfields sites. This assistance is often the catalyst to restore to productive use sites that have been community eyesores or potential hazards. |
