Environmental Progress - Summer 2003Deadline For SCALE Applications is November 30, 2003Program entering second half of two year run
SCALE (Streambank Cleanup And Lakeshore Enhancement) is a pilot financial assistance program administered by Illinois EPA, designed to provide financial assistance up to $2,000 to organizations to conduct 2004 streambank or lakeshore cleanups. In 2003, SCALE awarded grants to 37 organizations. As of Sept. 1, 2003, 17 of the recipients had held their cleanups and removed 43 tons of trash from more than 150 miles of streams and 60 acres of lakes in Illinois. More than 2,500 people had participated in SCALE funded cleanup events to that date. Funds are available only to organizations that have already established a recurring streambank or lakeshore cleanup. Priority will be given to those cleanup events that are within a priority watershed as identified by Illinois EPA in the Illinois 2002 Section 303(d) list (IEPA/BOW/02-009). Additional information can be obtained by calling the Nonpoint Source Unit at 217-782-3362 for a program brochure and application. Completed applications must be returned to Illinois EPA before November 30, 2003. Program funds are provided by U.S. EPA through Section 310 of the Clean Water Act. |
