Environmental Progress - Fall 2004Governor's Clean School Bus Program Adds Visual Aid for SchoolsAnti-idling Video Available Illinois EPA Director Renee Cipriano announced the development of a video addressing school bus idling and technologies to reduce school bus emissions. The video, created by the Illinois EPA, was funded by a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Students at Ball-Chatham schools helped launch the Governor's Clean School Bus Program last year. "We wanted to provide a tool to school districts on school bus idling and ways to improve their school bus fleet," said Director Cipriano. "This video addresses those issues and we intend to distribute it to school districts throughout the state." The Governor's Clean School Bus Program was launched in October 2003, offering grants to school districts to incorporate equipment and fuel to reduce diesel emissions. Since the creation of the program, numerous school districts in the state have received funding and reduced emissions from their school buses. Through the Clean School Bus Program, the Illinois EPA hosted workshops throughout the State to provide an overview of the program and funding opportunities. The creation of a video is an addition piece to educate school districts and improve the environment. The Illinois Clean School Bus video will be available in coming weeks and the Agency will be providing copies to school districts at no expense.
