Environmental Progress - Spring 2005Earth Month Kicks Off With 32 School Greening Project Grants Awarded by Illinois EPAPart of Governor Blagovich's Safe and Healthy Schools Initiative Governor Rod Blagojevich and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency kicked off Earth Month on April 1 by announcing the awarding of School Greening grants in 32 communities across the state, as part of the Governor's Safe and Healthy Schools Initiative. The small grants will fund projects improving school environments and conserving resources, such as buying lighting and water conservation sensors, native plants for landscaping, nontoxic cleaning supplies, green chemistry curriculum materials, composting equipment, and recycled content picnic tables, porous pavement systems, rainwater cisterns, and even funding to help build a wind turbine. "These grants are part of the multi-faceted commitment by Governor Blagojevich and the Illinois EPA to work in partnership with school officials to provide healthier indoor and outdoor environments for Illinois students," said Illinois Environmental Protection Agency Director Renee Cipriano. The grants of up to $2,500 are available to schools to fund environmental improvement projects, such as products and/or equipment that will improve indoor environmental conditions, reduce waste and enhance energy efficiency. "While the grants are for relatively small amounts they can provide a big payoff in a healthier and more pleasing school environment, reduced utility costs and provide applied lessons in environmentally-friendly practices," added Director Cipriano. Other elements of the Safe and Healthy Schools Initiative have included numerous workshops for school personnel on environmentally-safe maintenance and "green chemistry" techniques; pickups to provide safe removal of potentially hazardous chemicals from schools; a "Green Schools" instructional video; pilot "indoor environmental coordinator" grants; and the Governor's Clean School Bus program that provides grants and technical assistance for equipment and fuels and instructional workshops to reduce potentially hazardous diesel bus fumes.
