Pumpkin Collections
Millions of pumpkins are grown each year and used by citizens for decorative purposes during the Halloween/Fall season. At the end of the season, they are discarded by various means. Some communities may choose to hold one-day pumpkin collection events as a way to divert these pumpkins from the general waste stream and keep them from ending up in a landfill. Pumpkins collected at approved one-day events must be transported to IEPA-permitted compost facilities.
Communities or other organizations that would like to conduct one-day pumpkin collection events must fill out the
Request for Approval of One-day Pumpkin Collection Event form and return the form to the IEPA for review. The IEPA will review the information provided about the proposed event and reply to the listed contact person with a written approval or denial. If the request is approved, the IEPA may impose
conditions as necessary to protect human health and the environment. Additional conditions may be added as necessary.
One-day pumpkin collection events must be operated in accordance with the IEPA’s approval, including all conditions contained in the approval. The IEPA will not approve a one-day collection event at the same site or facility for more than one day each calendar quarter.
