Recycling

One of the easiest things we can all do to improve our environment is to recycle wastes whenever possible. Recycling saves natural resources and energy and reduces the need for landfills or incinerators. It can also increase local jobs by collecting processing and manufacturing new products out of discarded materials. glass recycling

The Illinois EPA does not directly permit recycling centers. These are the places where you may take your glass bottles, aluminum cans, newspapers and other household recyclables. Sometimes you may even be paid for delivering these materials. Many private businesses and some local governments operate recycling centers. How do you find them? Here are some tips:

Look in your local phone book's yellow pages under "recycling centers". Or contact the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, Bureau of Energy and Recycling for more information about grants.
Ask your local solid waste coordinator.
Contact the Illinois Recycling Association. Their members are recycling companies and local governments that collect recyclables.
If you are in Chicago, contact the Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation for information on their blue bag recycling program.

Remember!

It's not recycling until you buy a recycled product!
Look for information on a product's labeling that indicates that it or its packaging is made from recycled materials.
Encourage your company, local government, school, church and everyone else to buy products with a high recycled content.
