Leaf Burning

As trees shed their leaves again in the annual autumn rite, and rakes and leafblowers come out of garages, Illinois EPA frequently gets many questions from the public about disposing of them in a safe environmentally-friendly matter. The IEPA Bureau of Air has prepared an "Air Facts" document that includes information on state law regarding burning of leaves and landscape waste, nonburning options and potential health impacts (Acrobat PDF). In addition, kids may want to find out more about leaf burning in our Envirofun section. While leaf burning is restricted or banned in some parts of the state and allowed in others, the Illinois EPA urges all citizens to use healthier disposal options and also to consider the potential impact on their neighbors, who may have health conditions that could be aggravated by smoke from leaves and landscape waste.
