Cleanup Programs
Brownfields
The Office of Brownfields Assistance
offers technical and financial support designed to assit municipalities
across the state in cleaning up and restoring abandoned and/or underutilized
contaminated properties, commonly referred to as brownfields.
Cleanups in Illinois Under the Federal Superfund Program
The Superfund
Program allows for state oversight of cleanup activities at contaminated
sites subject to the provisions of the Comprehensive Environmental Response,
Compensation and Liability Act of 1980, as amended (known as CERCLA
or Superfund). The sites may be abandoned hazardous waste disposal areas,
abandoned mines, landfills or properties where the federal government
conducted activities that resulted in hazardous waste, explosives, unexploded
ordance, radioactive waste, fuels or other hazardous substances that
continue to present an unacceptable risk to human health and the environment.
Leaking Underground Storage Tanks
This program oversees the remedial
activities after a release from an underground storage tank has been
reported to the Illinois Emergency Management Agency.
State Response Action
The main objective of the State Response Action Program is to clean
up hazardous substances at sites that present an imminent and substantial
threat to human health and the environment, but which may not be addressed
by other federal or state cleanup programs. The sites handled by the
State Response Action Program include abandoned landfills, old manufacturing
plants, former waste oil recycling operations, contaminated agrichemicals
facilities and other areas where surface water, groundwater, soil and
air may be contaminated with hazardous substances.
Site Remediation Program
The SRP cleanup program
provides Remediation Applicants (i.e., any persons seeking to perform
voluntary investigative or remedial activities) with the opportunity
to receive review, technical assistance and no further remediation determinations
for the Illinois EPA.
