Your Local Environment
A wide range of information is available from Illinois EPA and others
to help you learn more about the environmental conditions in your community.
On this page, we’ve provided links to databases and other information
about pollutants that may affect the environment.
Right to Know
The Right to
Know law requires Illinois EPA to notify citizens when contamination
in soil or groundwater poses a threat of exposure to the public.
Conditions Overview
With U.S. EPA’s Window to My
Environment, use interactive maps and tools to learn about environmental
conditions, pollution sources, and watersheds in your community.
Air Quality
This air quality index reports daily air quality for five major air
pollutants: ground-level ozone, particulate matter, carbon monoxide,
sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxide.
This report highlights information obtained from the statewide air
monitoring network, which incorporates more than 300 monitors that
track the measurements of a variety of pollutants and air toxic compounds.
Land
Land Cleanups
Search these remediation databases to
learn about remediation activities in your community. You can
also view a map of sites that are part of the Voluntary Site Remediation
program or the Leaking Underground Storage Tank (LUST) Site Remediation
program.
Solid Waste Permits
Use this database to learn about permit
applications submitted and permits granted for the management of non-hazardous
waste at landfills, transfer stations, compost, and waste storage,
treatment, processing, and recovery facilities.
Landfill Capacity Report
This report provides information
about landfill disposal and available landfill capacity in Illinois,
describes the management of nonhazardous municipal solid waste by the
state's solid waste landfills and transfer stations.
Water Quality
Drinking Water
Drinking Water Watch -
Local government officials and citizens can access information on
the quality of the sources of public drinking water supplies and
the quality of finished water coming out of the tap at this drinking
water web portal.
Public
Water Supply Annual Compliance Report - To satisfy the requirement
of the Safe Drinking Water Act, Illinois EPA must prepare, make
readily available to the public, and submit to the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency, an annual report on violations of national primary
drinking water regulations.
Source
Water Assessment and Protection (SWAP) The purpose of SWAP
is to identify areas that supply drinking water to the public,
inventory potential sources of contamination, determine the susceptibility
of the source water to contamination, and inform the public of
the assessment results. This site contains fact sheets on source
water (wells drawing from groundwater, lakes and streams) for community
water supplies and more detailed secure information for local government
officials, environmental consultants, and municipal planners.
Rivers, Streams, Lakes and Groundwater
Water Resource Assessments -
Data on rivers and streams, inland lakes, Lake Michigan, and groundwater
are collected annually and water quality conditions are assessed.
Results of these assessments are available in a comprehensive Illinois
Water Quality Report and an associated Illinois Water Quality Information
Mapping Tool; a summary of Condition of Illinois Water Resources
reports; and various maps and graphs.
Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) - TMDLs,
required by the Clean Water Act, are calculations of the maximum
amount of a pollutant that a water body can receive and still meet
water quality standards. Illinois EPA encourages public participation
as it develops TMDLs for all impaired water bodies in the state.
Pollution Sources
Envirofacts - This website
provides access to several U.S. EPA databases containing information
about environmental activities that may affect air, water, and land
anywhere in the United States.
Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) - Information
about FOIA rules and procedures to request public information from
Illinois EPA are available at this web page.
