Mercury Thermostat Collection and Recycling

Mercury Thermostat Collection and Recycling

Thermostat Contractor Requirements

Beginning July 1, 2011, HVAC contractors removing, replacing, or otherwise taking a mercury-switch thermostat out of service must deliver such thermostats to a collection site.   Contractors must also handle and manage out-of-service mercury thermostats as universal waste. HVAC contractors who employ 7 or more service technicians or installers or who are located outside of an urban area may obtain a collection bin from the Thermostat Recycling Corporation.  Information on how to become a collection site is available on the Thermostat Recycling Corporation website.
