Springfield, Ill. -- The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is cosponsoring 19 household hazardous waste collections from March through June 1996. Eight events are planned in the greater Chicago area and one in Chicago; the remainder are scattered throughout the state.

Collections are scheduled on Saturdays, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Residents of cosponsoring communities are urged to bring weed killers, drain cleaners, paints, thinners, antifreeze, pesticides and similar household hazardous products. Explosives, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, agricultural chemicals and business wastes will not be accepted. To reduce the volume at these one-day events, residents are asked to take their used motor oil and auto batteries to local recyclers.

"These popular events allow citizens to properly dispose of potentially hazardous household products," said Illinois EPA Director Mary A. Gade. "To date the Agency has assisted 133 successful collections, which filled 21,873 drums with hazardous wastes gathered from more than 122,370 households."

Household hazardous waste collections are free to the public. A contractor hired by the Illinois EPA correctly disposes of all collected wastes. The program is funded by statewide fees on landfilled solid waste.
