Springfield, Ill. - The Illinois Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) is co-sponsoring 13 household hazardous
waste collections from late August to early November 1996. Six
events are planned in central and southern Illinois, six in
northeastern Illinois and one in Chicago.
Collections are scheduled on Saturdays, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Residents of cosponsoring communities are urged to bring weed
killers, drain cleaners, paints, thinners, antifreeze, pesticides
and similar household hazardous products. Unacceptable are
explosives, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, agricultural
chemicals and business wastes. Additionally, event organizers ask
residents to take their used motor oil and auto batteries to
local recyclers.
"We schedule a number of these popular one-day events
each spring and fall so citizens can safely dispose of
potentially hazardous household products," said Illinois EPA
Director Mary A. Gade. "So far, the Agency has assisted in
152 successful collections, which altogether filled 25,360 drums
with hazardous wastes gathered from nearly 139,000
households."
Household hazardous waste collections are free to the public.
A contractor hired by the Illinois EPA correctly disposes of all
collected wastes. The program is funded by statewide fees on
landfilled solid waste.
