News Releases - 1996Beecher Water Plant Operator Wins Top Professional Award
Springfield, Ill. -- William L. Merritt, of Momence, superintendent of public works for the village of Beecher, has been named Operator of the Year in the groundwater category by the Illinois Potable Water Supply Operators Association (IPWSOA). The award is the highest professional honor operators can receive in recognition of service and performance in the waterworks industry. Awards are presented annually in surface, groundwater, and distribution categories, with two runners-up in each division. Merritt received the recognition and a trophy during ceremonies at the 65th annual IPWSOA conference in Springfield Thursday (Sept. 12). The conference is co-sponsored by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, which regulates public water supplies in the state. Runners-up in the 1996 groundwater category were Rickey L. Broaddus, water and sewer superintendent for Raymond, and Doug Chambers, water commissioner for the village of East Alton. Merritt has been a water supply operator for eight years and a wastewater plant operator for 14 years. He oversees a water system pumping 230,000 gallons daily through 11 miles of mains to 751 service connections. Steven R. Scully, East Moline, was named Operator of the Year for surface water supplies, and Steven R. Pittman, Hoffman Estates, was designated Operator of the Year in the distribution category. Runners-up in the surface water category were Larry D. Goldsmith, of the Northern Illinois Water Corp./Streator, and Joe A. Murucco, Taylorville. Distribution category runners-up were Gregory A. Bates, of the Jersey County Rural Water Co., Inc., and David J. Speagle, with the Langleyville Public Water District. |
