Springfield, Ill. -- A Removal Action will be conducted at the Rock Island Plating Works site located at 385 16th Avenue in Rock Island, Illinois. Work is scheduled to begin mid-September and should be completed in approximately 60 days . The Rock Island Plating Works site operated a small electroplating facility until April 1996. Earlier this summer, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) and Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) representatives conducted a removal assessment to collect liquid and floor sludge samples to determine the extent of contamination at the site. Preliminary analytical results indicate elevated levels of chromium, lead, nickel, and zinc in the various liquid samples taken. The sludge sample contained elevated level of total arsenic, chromium, cyanide, lead nickel and zinc.

Due to the proximity of the site to local residents, workers and children and the lack of maintenance and evidence of release from the on-site containers, the U.S. EPA, along with EPA oversight, will conduct a removal action which includes consolidating and staging debris and conducting sampling and compatibility testing on all drums, tanks, vats, and miscellaneous containers. In addition, the removal action will involve conducting bulk testing; bulking all large waste streams; and preparing composite samples and submitting them for disposal bids. The waste will be transported to off-site disposal facilities. The U.S.EPA will also be conducting soil and groundwater sampling, whether or not soil contamination exists, and excavation and disposal of contaminated soil, if necessary.
