News Releases - 1996Volunteers Honored for 15 Years Service to Lake Monitoring Effort
Springfield, Ill. -- Sixteen citizens have been honored by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for 15 years of participation in the Agency’s Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program (VLMP). Illinois EPA Director Mary A. Gade thanked the volunteers for their dedication to improving Ilinois lakes, and for donating their time to the program. "You are a shining example of citizens becoming active partners with their state government. Together, you have contributed 240 years of work, in all kinds of conditions, to accumulate data that will help keep your lakes healthy for years to come. This kind of citizen-level volunteer involvement provides the base on which successful environmental protection relies." Volunteers each received a Certificate of Appreciation. A special non-volunteer recognition was given to Rick Twait, of Hudson, Ill., for his work as president of the Illinois Lake Management Association. The VLMP was started in 1981 with 87 lakes enrolled. By 1996, the program has grown to 170 monitored lakes, with another 20 to be added in 1997. Volunteers measure water clarity, and record other field observations such as water color and presence of various aquatic plants. The data is published yearly in a report, "Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program" available from the Bureau of Water, Box 19376, Springfield, Ill.62794-9276. The 15 year VLMP honorees include:
