Springfield, Ill. -- The
Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is cosponsoring 15
household hazardous waste collections, from mid-March to early
June 1997. Eight events are planned to take place in central and
southern Illinois, seven in the metropolitan Chicago area.
"These popular events allow citizens to rid
their homes of unused or leftover household products, which
improperly disposed of, could seriously harm human health or the
environment," said Illinois EPA Director Mary A. Gade.
"To date, the Agency has orchestrated 163 successful
collections, filling 31,106 drums with hazardous wastes from more
than 165,000 households."
Collections are scheduled on Saturdays, from 8
a.m. to 3 p.m., for greatest convenience to working families.
Citizens are asked to bring harsh chemical cleaners, paints,
thinners, antifreeze, weed killers, insecticides and pesticides,
and similar household hazardous products. Participants are urged
to take used motor oil and auto batteries to local recyclers.
Explosives, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors,
agricultural chemicals and business wastes will be turned away.
Household hazardous waste collections are
conducted each spring and fall and are free to the public. A
contractor hired by the Illinois EPA correctly disposes of all
collected wastes. The program is funded by statewide fees on
landfilled solid waste. Following are dates, cities, collection
points, cosponsors and local contacts for forthcoming
collections:
