News Releases - 1997Illinois EPA Adds Household Hazardous-Waste Collection in Southern Illinois to Benefit Recent Flood Victims
Springfield, Ill. -- The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has added a household hazardous-waste collection to its spring schedule to benefit flood victims in Southern Illinois. The collection is scheduled for Saturday, April 19, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the public swimming pool parking lot, 312 W. 4th St., Metropolis. The Agency emphasized that this free collection is to allow citizens to safely dispose of chemicals and similar household hazardous wastes, but not flood-damaged appliances, furniture and other debris. Agency officials also stressed that the event is open to all Southern Illinoisans, and is not limited just to flood victims. Participants are asked to bring harsh chemical cleaners, paints, thinners, antifreeze, weed killers, insecticides and pesticides, and similar hazardous products. Citizens are urged to take used motor oil and auto batteries to local recyclers. Explosives, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, agricultural chemicals and business wastes will be turned away. A contractor hired by the Illinois EPA correctly disposes of all collected wastes. The program is funded by statewide fees on landfilled solid waste. |
