Springfield, Ill. -- Seventy-six recipients
will be recognized for their volunteer lake monitoring efforts
during the 12th annual conference of the Illinois Lake Management
Association on May 2-3 in Decatur, Ill. Honorees are all
participants in the Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program sponsored
by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The
program marked its 16th anniversary in 1996.
During 1996, 253 volunteers monitored water transparency and
other parameters on 157 lakes throughout Illinois. Volunteers
monitored at least three sites on a lake of their choice twice
each month from May through October and sent the collected data
to the Illinois EPA for analysis.
The information provides an indication of general water
quality and the extent of usable habitat for fish and other
aquatic life, identifies lake and watershed problems, and helps
in determining lake and watershed management strategies.
Consistent monitoring and observation for several years are
necessary to establish trends for an individual lake. To
underscore the importance of their contributions, the Illinois
EPA each year recognizes those volunteers who have consistently
monitored their lakes for a year or more.
