Springfield, Ill. -- With a slither and a gurgle and a chirp, the Illinois EPA's "Earthship" has entered orbit on the World Wide Web.

The Agency's "Envirofun" site contains interactive information designed to make learning about the environment fun as well as informative. Recognizing that the earth, like a spaceship, is a closed system with limited amounts of air, water, and soil available for use by its residents, "Envirofun" explains why everyone has a stake in protecting these essentials.

The initial entry, "Our Earthship," introduces Captains Earthworm, Bluegill and Redbird, who look at the ways in which nature recycles the elements necessary for life. The program has been planned to evolve over a two-year "flight" with the three colorful animated captains as recurring participants.

"We hope this will be a fun but informative way for young people to learn more about the importance of protecting our precious environment," Illinois EPA Director Mary A. Gade said.

The overall program is targeted at a third grade reading and comprehension level, but other parts of the "Envirofun" package will highlight young environmentalists at various grade levels who are displaying leadership qualities in their schools and communities, as well as essays, poetry, and posters that took top awards in the Illinois EPA's annual environmental education program for Illinois fifth graders. Visitors can also solve a riddle, make their own copy of a water wheel, or learn how to put worms to work in a compost heap.

Visitors to the site, accessible through the Governor's Environmental Home Page/Web site at "http://www.state.il.us" are invited to sign the Earthship's log book, take a deep breath of clean air, a big drink of safe water, and plant their feet firmly on the soil of the only Earth we have.

The site can also be accessed on the Agency's home page, "http://www.epa.state.il.us".
