News Releases - 1997Emissions Test Van Coming to Metro-East Area
Springfield, Ill. -- Citizens in the Metro-East area whose cars are subject to vehicle emissions testing can utilize the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) vehicle emissions test van starting May 14. The test van will operate in Cahokia each Wednesday from May 14 through Oct. 29, 1997, in cooperation with Cahokia Mayor Mike King. Tests will be conducted at the Cahokia Emergency Services and Disaster Agency (ESDA) Building, 200 W. First St. (across from Cahokia Village Hall), from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 - 4 p.m., weather permitting. The mobile test van contains all equipment necessary for the required emissions checks and is designed for citizens who find it inconvenient to take their vehicles to the permanent testing stations. Model year 1968 and later vehicles in the Metro-East area are subject to biennial emissions tests under the Illinois Vehicle Emissions Inspection Law. Those motorists whose cars are subject to the test are notified by mail, and are asked to bring their notice with them to the test site. The current vehicle emissions test program checks about 2.5 million vehicles per year for excessive emissions of harmful air pollutants, and has resulted in a 25 percent reduction in vehicle emissions since the program started in 1986. There are three test stations in the Metro-East area where motorists may also have their vehicles tested: 1710 Vaughn Road, Wood River; 1800 E. Broadway St., East St. Louis; and 1000 E. Chain of Rocks Road, Mitchell. Those with questions about the vehicle emissions test program can call the Motorist Assistance Hotline at 800-635-2380. |
