News Releases - 1997Funds Available for Lake Education Activities
Springfield, Ill. -- Schools and other non-profit organizations can now apply for grants of up to $500 for field trips and other activities related to inland lake and lake watershed education. The funding of Lake Education Assistance Program (LEAP) grants is part of an education initiative offered by the Illinois EPA under Conservation 2000, the comprehensive multi-year environmental protection program signed into law by Gov. Jim Edgar in 1995. Applications will be accepted in two time periods, one ending Sept. 30, 1997, and the other Jan. 31, 1998. Only one application will be accepted from a school, organization or community for each application period. All work funded in either period must be completed by June 30, 1998. LEAP grants can be used to fund attendance at seminars and workshops related to inland lake/lake watershed protection and restoration or to purchase workbooks and supplies for these training events. Projects and activities must have clearly defined goals and involve the enhanced inland lake/lake watershed education of teachers, students, organizations and/or the community. A one page final report is required of participants including the level of participant involvement, videos, photographs, artwork, and/or written work. Funding is offered as reimbursement of costs incurred, including supplies, scientific equipment, substitute teacher payment, buses and drivers, seminar and workshop fees, software and visual materials. Participants must submit reimbursement requests with supporting documentation to the Illinois EPA by June 30, 1998. Late requests will not be accepted and will become the responsibility of the participant. Additional information can be obtained from Steve Kolsto, in the Illinois EPA's Bureau of Water at 217-782-3362. |
