Meetings Will Outline Availability of Federal Funds For Nonpoint Source

Springfield, Ill. -- Three meetings have been scheduled by the
Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to identify qualified applicants and
projects eligible to share in federal Section 319 funding to protect or restore waters
impacted by nonpoint source pollution.
The meetings will be held at Waubonsee Community College, west of Aurora, on Oct. 29;
in the Marion regional office of the Illinois EPA on Nov. 4, and at the Illinois EPA's
Springfield regional office on Nov. 13. All sessions will begin at 10 a.m., and run until
approximately 3 p.m. Morning sessions will explain the program and eligibility
requirements. Afternoons will be devoted to providing specific information and answers.
The Section 319 program allocates money for yearly grants to implement best management
practices to combat nonpoint source pollution of state water resources. For the current
year, approximately $2.5 million is available, with applications due by next Feb. 1.
Funding will be allocated late in 1998 on a 60-40 basis, with 319 money covering 60
percent of the project cost, and the applicant responsible for the remaining 40 percent.
