Rockton, Ill. -- The Phase IV field investigative activity for the
remedial investigation (RI) is scheduled to begin the first week of November 1997 at the
Beloit Corporation Superfund Site located in Rockton. The activities for this portion of
the RI will involve data collection that will help evaluate the potential of a volatile
organic compound (VOC) source in the vicinity of the southern portion of Blackhawk Acres
subdivision, determine the effectiveness of the pump and treat system, and further
evaluate the direction of groundwater flow south of the site.
The remedial investigation has been conducted as a phased approach with the Phase I
investigation providing preliminary characterization of the site hydrogeology and
groundwater quality and the evaluation of potential source areas. Phase II gathered data
on potential VOC source areas at the site, and further characterized the extent of
contamination in the area. Phase III evaluated and eliminated potential migration pathways
and delineated the extent of VOCs in groundwater to the south of Beloit Corporation
property. This phase also involved sampling activities which were used to access potential
ecological impacts. The Phase IV investigative activities are intended to complete
characterization of the extent of VOCs in groundwater in order to develop and evaluate
final remedial alternatives.
Investigative activities are being performed by Beloit Corporation with oversight by an
Illinois Environmental Protection Agency contractor. Work will begin during the first week
of November and will be completed the beginning of December 1997.
