News Releases - 1998Illinois EPA Schedules Sampling at Parson's Casket Superfund Site
Springfield, Ill. -- The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) plans to begin precision field studies at the Parson's Casket Hardware Co. Superfund site, in Belvidere, on March 30. The activities are expected to continue for about two weeks. The studies are the last major milestone prior to final remediation of soils, which could begin as early as next year. Soil sampling will confirm the extent and degree of contamination at the site, and help assure complete, safe removal and disposal of contaminated soil. These studies will use various methods to determine the exact characteristics of the waste at the site. Sampling results are expected to be announced in the fall, along with details of the final work plan and the scheduling of a public meeting concerning future remediation at the site. Removal of contaminated soil could begin in 1999, depending on availability of adequate funding. All documents related to the site are placed in the Parson's Casket repository at the Ida Public Library, 320 N. State St., Belvidere. Parson's Casket Hardware Co. produced metal fittings for caskets from 1898 to 1982. Investigations at the site revealed groundwater and soil contamination sufficient for placement on the National Priorities List, or Superfund, in 1987. |
