Eight Lakes Awarded State Clean Lakes Program Grants

Springfield, Ill. -- Five new Illinois lake study and improvement projects will receive nearly $560,000 through the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Clean Lakes Program. The program, now in its second year, is funded by Conservation 2000, a $100 million state initiative protecting Illinois' natural resources and expanding outdoor recreation.

"Thanks to Conservation 2000, Illinois is one of only a handful of states providing long-term funding to safeguard its valuable lakes," Illinois EPA Director Mary A. Gade said.

Lakes awarded grants, and the amounts they will receive, are:

  • Channel and Catherine Lakes, Lake County, $100,395;
  • Evergreen Lake, McLean County, $60,000;
  • Lake Bloomington, McLean County, $60,000;
  • Meadow Lake, Lake Marmo, and Sterling Pond, DuPage County, $70,446; and
  • Indian Lake, Cook County, $267,186.

Grants help fund studies to develop technically and economically feasible improvement plans, or implementation of those plans. The Indian Lake grant is for an implementation project; the others are for plan development. Last year, one implementation and five plan development grants totaling nearly $500,000 were awarded.

The Illinois EPA plans to provide about $3 million in lake study and improvement grants over the six-year Conservation 2000 period. In 1999, the Agency expects to award about $750,000 in project funds. Pre-applications for 1999 grants should be submitted to the Illinois EPA by August 31, 1998. Final applications are due Oct. 31, 1998.

Conservation 2000 also provides funds to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Department of Agriculture.
