News Releases - 1998Informational Meeting on Salt Creek Watershed Set for May 20
Springfield, Ill. -- A public information meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on May 20 in Wood Dale to discuss results of a recent study of the Salt Creek watershed. The meeting will be held in the Elmhurst City Hall, 209 York St., with the the Salt Creek Watershed Network and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency co-hosting the event. "This study is an initial step to define water quality problems in the Salt Creek Watershed and to develop water quality control strategies to ultimately provide information to the residents in the watershed," according to Jim Park, Chief, Bureau of Water, Illinois EPA. The United States Geological Survey office in Urbana conducted some field work and all water quality modeling work through a cooperative agreement with the Illinois EPA. Stationary or point sources of water pollution such as industries or municipalities that discharge substances into surface water through pipes, ditches, or lagoons were evaluated in this study. A copy of the four volume study is available for public review at the following repositories:
Eventually, this study and future studies of non-point sources of water pollution in the Salt Creek Watershed will be used to establish Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) for the stream. A TMDL is the greatest amount of loading that a body of water can receive without violating water quality standards. Questions and written comments about this study can be directed to Lalit K. Sinha (#15), Planning Section, Division of Water Pollution Control, Illinois EPA, P.O. Box 19276, 1021 North Grand Avenue East, Springfield, Illinois 62794-9276. |
